Some artists leave a trail. Others quietly build their own world and keep adding to it.
Jon Marshall, better known as fat jon, has been doing exactly that for more than twenty-five years. From Five Deez to Maurice Galactica, from countless productions to the music he created alongside Nujabes for the legendary *Samurai Champloo* soundtrack, his records have never been about chasing a moment. They simply found the people who needed them. The recently re-uploaded soundtrack has already surpassed 100 million streams within just a few months, introducing both longtime listeners and a whole new generation to music that has never really aged.
Somewhere between dusty drums, drifting synths, piano sketches and breakbeats, fat jon developed a language that still feels difficult to imitate because it was never designed to become a formula. His records leave space. They don't rush to explain themselves. They unfold over time, revealing new details with every return.
*Black Time Circle* is another piece of that language. Twelve instrumentals moving naturally from slow-burning boom bap into expansive breakbeats without ever announcing the shift. Nothing feels forced. Every sound seems to have settled exactly where it belongs. The album features a single guest appearance by FloFilz, whose layered string arrangements on "Veya, Pt. 2" open another window into Jon's world, while Japanese painter Takuya KOMABA once again provides the artwork.
No comeback, no reinvention. Just another record from someone who's still listening closely.
